Common Questions About Liposuction

Common Questions About Liposuction

As with any surgery, it’s important that you have as much information as possible before you decide to move forward with plastic surgery.

Since we get our fair share of inquiries about body enhancement procedures, I thought it would be helpful to post some of the common questions about one of our more popular surgeries for this – liposuction.

I’ve heard a lot about complications related to Liposuction. How safe is the procedure?

When liposuction was first introduced, the complication rate was much higher than it is now. This was largely due to the newness of the procedure and the larger cannulas and larger incisions used to perform liposuction.

Today’s liposuction is performed with much smaller cannulas and thus much smaller incisions, and the complication rate is extremely low. In fact, liposuction is one of the safest available plastic surgery procedures available thanks to new technology and innovative new techniques.

I have a large amount of belly fat. Is Liposuction a good option for me?

Patients with a large quantity of fat to remove are usually not good candidates for liposuction. Liposuction is intended to help with body contouring and is designed to remove small fat deposits that do not respond even to diligent diet and exercise.

Candidates for liposuction are likely to have better results if they are close to their ideal weight. Those wishing to remove larger quantities of fat might want to consider a tummy tuck instead.

How long after I have Liposuction will I have to wait before I can go back to work?

Recovery after liposuction is fairly quick and easy, since it is a minimally invasive procedure. Swelling and redness will persist for several days after the procedure is performed, but your doctor will provide special pressure garments to help minimize swelling and ensure proper healing.

You should be able to go back to work within three to five days if you have an office job. For more strenuous work, you will probably have to wait a week or two.

Does Liposuction leave extensive scarring?

Because the size of the cannula, or tube, used in liposuction is quite small, the incisions are also small, usually only about half an inch.

Although several incisions might be necessary to accomplish your individual goals, your doctor will place them as discreetly as possible so that they are unlikely to show once healing is complete.

If you have a tendency to develop keloid scars, or if you have other skin conditions that could affect the healing process, be sure to mention this to your doctor during your initial consultation.
