Effective Scar Therapy – Silicone Gel

One of the most prevalent concerns for patients contemplating elective surgery is scarring.  Patients will often ask if their scar will be noticeable, especially when they are having a surgical procedure in an area that will not be covered by clothing

I am pleased to report that scar therapy has come a long way in recent years – both in the treatment of old scars as well as preventative treatment during the healing process.  While there is no way to completely eliminate scarring, many of my patients have experienced great results with bioCorneum®+,

In 2002 the International Clinical Recommendations were published for scar treatment therapy with only one recommendation for topical (non-invasive) treatment of scars – 100% silicone.  There was insufficient evidence that any other product worked well enough to earn a recommendation.

A patented silicone scar treatment, bioCorneum®+ has been shown to:

  • Reduced hypertrophy rate of fresh surgical scars
  • Flatten, soften and smooth scars
  • Reduce discoloration
  • Relieve associated itch, pain and discomfort of scars
  • Provide an SPF 30UV protection from sun exposure

For best results, I recommend that my patients start applying a thin layer of bioCorneum®+ as soon as sutures are removed.  To achieve optimal effects, bioCorneum®+ must be in contact with the scar 24 hours a day.  A twice daily application of the gel for 12 weeks is usually sufficient unless you have a tendency to form hypertrophic (raised, red) scars or keloids; if so, you may want to use bioCorneum®+ for up to a year.

bioCorneum®+ is effective for old and new scars.  If you have suffered from the long-term effects of scarring, bioCorneum®+ can be applied for the management of hypertrophic (raised, red) scars and keloids resulting from cosmetic and surgical procedures, trauma, wounds and burns.

bioCorneum®+ is available exclusively in physicians’ offices.  I carry this highly effective product in my office as a convenience for you and recommend that all of our patients use this gel as soon as their sutures are removed and the wound is closed.
