Restylane has fast become a growing favorite when it comes to sculpting lips and smoothing out wrinkles. As it is classed as a dermal filler it is perfect for lifting and shaping features. One other reason it is so popular is that it has long-lasting effects, sometimes up to six-months and more. It is made from hyaluronic acid which can be found as a natural substance in our bodies. If you want to know more about Restylane read our guide below.
What Is It?
Restylane was approved by the FDA as a dermal filler, and contains hyaluronic acid which is found in all living organisms, providing fullness and volume to the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that is located naturally in your skin, where there are spaces between the joints; it makes these areas slippery. Basically, it acts like a sponge as it absorbs water, while acting as a cushioning agent. When it is injected into your skin, by a trained professional it expands, thus filling out any wrinkles or folds. With this extra water brought to the skins surface it makes the face look more radiant, while having a softer, more supple texture on the skin. The injections also induce collagen production, which in turn helps plump and firm the face. It is excellent to smooth out fine lines, acne scars, deep wrinkles, while adding volume to lips. Overall, it can give a full, lifted appearance.
How Long Does It Last?
Generally, Restylane will last anywhere between six and nine months, but this is dependent on many factors such as the amount required, the area it is to be administered in, and even down to the patient’s metabolism. Commonly, you will find that it lasts in areas where there is least mobility, such as under the eyelids, but it will dissipate quickly in the lips. Some people experience pain when undergoing treatment, while others feel just a pinch, but generally the numbing cream will do its job. One question your doctor will want to know is the timing of your treatment. There is no point having injections the day before your wedding, or an important interview.
Post-Care
Once treated it will take around two weeks for any swelling and bruising to go down. The best way to treat these effects is to use periodic icing with cold compresses for the first two days. Avoid ibuprofen and alcohol to help reduce the swelling. Arnica is good for post-treatment and is available at drug stores and health food stores. You may find that you have some lumps and unwanted bumps, yet these will go away as the Restylane dissolves over time. Patients can return immediately to normal activities, though they are advised to stay out of the sun. Finally, be patient when it comes to expectations of results, as the bruising and swelling will initially mask your treatment. But when this recedes you will notice a huge difference.
