Just about everyone has a cosmetic flaw that they’d like to have corrected. Often times, an excessive amount of fat and skin on certain areas of the body are the main source of concern. Even fit and healthy individuals can find themselves with areas of the body that do not respond well to proper nutrition and regular exercise. Genetics is just one factor that may explain this stubborn fat that refuses to leave the tummy, thighs, or other parts of the body. When stubborn fat is a concern for our patients in Manhattan, plastic surgery may be the best solution. Scott E. Newman MD, FACS offers many plastic surgery procedures to sculpt and trim different areas of the body. One of the procedures available to address specific concerns on the outer and inner thighs is thigh lift surgery.
Who Is a Candidate for a Thigh Lift Procedure?
Thigh lift surgery is a procedure with a very specific purpose. The thigh lift can help to slim and tone the thighs by removing excess skin and fat for a slimmer look. Many women worry more about their thighs as warmer weather or vacation time approaches. The ideal candidates for thigh lift surgery are those with the following cosmetic flaws:
- An excessive amount of skin or fat on the thighs
- Loose skin, often the result of aging or the recent loss of a significant amount of weight
- The appearance of “saddle bags” on the outer thighs due to stubborn fat
- Inner thighs that touch or rub together
In addition to these characteristics that are specific to thigh lift surgery, some conditions make a patient a good candidate for surgery in general. All of our patients who wish to undergo plastic surgery should be healthy individuals who are committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
What to Expect During Thigh Lift Surgery
Dr. Newman will customize thigh lift surgery based on the amount and location of excessive fat and tissue. The patient and Dr. Newman will discuss the specifics of surgery during a consultation. For the majority of our patients in Manhattan, liposuctionwill be an important part of thigh lift surgery. Liposuction will allow Dr. Newman to remove the majority of excessive fat and tissue. Once liposuction has been performed, an incision will be made to remove any remaining skin or tissue that needs to be tightened or contoured. All of this should be completed within three hours while the patient is under general anesthesia.
Thigh Lift Recovery
Full recovery from thigh lift surgery will take an average of four to six weeks. During the first few days following surgery, you should expect to wear a compression garment, which will promote skin contraction and help minimize swelling. After two weeks, you should begin to slowly return to your regular routine, while still avoiding strenuous exercise. Pain and swelling are the two most likely side effects that you will experience during the thigh lift recovery period. Dr. Newman will prescribe pain medication to help you manage discomfort, as well as an antibiotic to help you avoid infection while you recover.
