Dermaroller microneedling has been wildly popular when it comes to acne treatment, especially when you are looking to correct wrinkles, stretch marks and scars. It is an affordable procedure that can be used safely by an expert dermatologist on a wide range of skin types.
What Is A Dermaroller?
A standard version of dermaroller is a drum-shaped instrument studded with microneedles in 8 rows. The needles are synthesized by reactive ion etching procedures on stainless steel or silicon. Gamma irradiation is used for pre-sterilization of the instrument.
What Are The Principles Behind Dermaroller Microneedling?
Collagen induction therapy is the fundamental principle of dermaroller microneedling. During the operation, the needles create holes by piercing through the stratum corneum. This leads to the release of growth factors, which stimulates collagen and elastin production in the papillary dermis. In addition to that, new capillaries are also formed. This induction therapy is also used to treat photo aging effects.
The Procedure Of Dermaroller Microneedling
Microneedling is a simple procedure that takes around half an hour to 45 minutes. The specified region of treatment is anesthetized with local anesthesia, after which rolling is done multiple times in a number of directions, both horizontally and vertically. Some bleeding or swelling may occur, which can be easily controlled. Saline pads are used to wet the affected area after treatment. Depending upon the extent of the treatment required, the entire process can last for around 20 minutes.
For moderate acne scars, 3-4 sessions may be required, and you need a gap of at least 6 weeks between 2 treatments, since it takes some time for fresh collagen production.
What Precautions Do You Need To Take After The Treatment?
Given the advancement in technology these days, it’s hard to associate significant side effects with microneedling, however one may witness erythema post-operation, lasting for a couple of days. In such a condition, photo projection is advised for a week, as well as local antibiotic creams.
Other than erythema, there has been no reports of other significant side effects. Infections after the operation do not occur because microholes close immediately. It’s a highly tolerable process and a cost-effective one, suitable for all skin types. However, make sure you are not using it near the eyes. The treatment can be combined with other acne treatments like fractional resurfacing, microdermabrasion and chemical peels, thus maximizing the effects.
Home-Care Dermarollers
For transdermal delivery of anti-ageing products and substances like lipopeptides, home-care dermarollers are also available, which is less than 0.15 mm in length. For up to 100 times, they can be used two times in a week. After the usage, you need to clean them in hot water and shake it dry. Miniature version of dermaroller includes dermastamps that is generally used for local scars, and the procedure can be performed in a couple of minutes.
However, these home-care dermarollers do not offer the same results as the advanced ones found in a medspa.
