What is otoplasty?
Also known as “ear pinning,” otoplasty is the surgical procedure in which your ears are reshaped to more ideally match your head. With this procedure, patients with overly large, distracting ears can enjoy a more symmetrical, appealing look.
How long does otoplasty surgery take?
In general, otoplasty takes anywhere from one to two hours per ear. Of course, your surgery will be customized to meet your exact needs and may take more or less time depending on the detail required. Experienced New York plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Newman will discuss this with you during your initial consultation.
Can otoplasty surgery impact hearing?
Otoplasty reshapes the outside of your ear. Hearing is performed by your middle and inner ear, which are left completely untouched during this surgery. As such, otoplasty will not affect your hearing in any way.
Is otoplasty appropriate for my child?
Otoplasty can be performed on patients as young as six years old. Dr. Newman is particularly sensitive to the needs of children, and will work with you and your child to determine if your child’s ears have developed sufficiently for the procedure to be effective.
Does otoplasty surgery produce scarring?
The incisions in otoplasty surgery are placed in the natural folds of your ears. This allows Dr. Newman to help reduce scar visibility. It is important to remember that all surgical procedures produce some scarring. Dr. Newman takes great care in ensuring the scars from this surgery are as minimal and unobtrusive as possible.
Who is an ideal candidate for otoplasty?
Candidates for otoplasty include adults and children who are embarrassed by the appearance of their ears. Additional criteria include being in general good health and having realistic expectations of your surgical results. Dr. Newman will work closely with you to help you determine if you or your child are good candidates for otoplasty.
